How to Clean Muddy Dog Paws After a Walk (Fast, Without the Mess)

Person wiping a dog's muddy paw with a microfiber towel at the front door

Rainy walks, wet grass and dog parks all end the same way: four muddy paws heading straight for your sofa. A two-minute routine by the door keeps your floors clean and is a good chance to check your dog's paws.

What you need

  • A towel you keep just for paws
  • A shallow container of lukewarm water, or a paw washer cup
  • A soft brush for mud stuck between the toes
  • Treats, to make paw cleaning a good thing

The 2-minute paw cleaning routine

  1. Stop at the door. Ask your dog to sit or stand on a mat before they come inside.
  2. One paw at a time. Dip the paw in lukewarm water and gently swish or work the mud loose. A paw washer cup with soft silicone bristles makes this faster.
  3. Clean between the toes. Mud, grit and small stones collect between the pads. Use your fingers or a soft brush.
  4. Dry thoroughly. Pat each paw dry, including between the toes. Damp fur between the pads can lead to irritation.
  5. Reward. A treat after each paw teaches your dog that paw cleaning is worth standing still for.

Check the paws while you're there

Paw cleaning is the perfect time for a quick health check. Look for:

  • Cuts, cracks or splinters on the pads
  • Burrs, grass seeds or stones between the toes
  • Redness, swelling or licking at one paw
  • Overgrown nails that click on the floor

If you spot a wound, limping or a foreign object you can't remove easily, contact your vet.

Winter walks: salt and de-icers

Road salt and de-icing chemicals can irritate paws, and dogs may lick them off later. After winter walks, rinse and dry the paws every time, even if they don't look dirty.

Set up a paw station by the door

Keep everything in one spot so the routine takes no effort: a washable mat, a paw towel on a hook, a paw washer cup, and a jar of treats. When cleaning is easy, you'll actually do it every time.

Making it stress-free

  • Start slowly with nervous dogs. Touch one paw, give a treat, and stop. Build up over several days.
  • Use lukewarm water, never hot or icy cold.
  • Keep sessions short and upbeat.
